Another milestone: Details of EV100’s revamp in India

EV100 was relaunched this June with an expanded scope and restructured framework. Here’s what it means for India:

What’s changed?

EV100+ will not be a standalone programme anymore and has been combined with EV100. This single programme – EV100 – now covers all vehicle types. This means that a business which previously committed to truck electrification under EV100+ can now also add cars, vans, or two wheelers.

Under EV100’s new structure:

  • New members, including in India, can look forward to a revised deadline of switching cars and vans to electric by 2035.
  • The target year for electrification of medium and heavy-duty vehicles is 2040.

The new structure replaces the previous 2030 deadline that applied to all vehicles in all markets.

Existing EV100+ members are now integrated into EV100 membership. Their commitments to medium- and heavy-duty transitions remain the same. But they can also make additional commitments in light duty vehicle segments (cars and vans).

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), considered interim technology, are no longer valid for EV100 commitments. New members will not be able to include PHEVs in commitments while existing members are strongly encouraged to phase them out. All future pledges will have to be fully zero-emission. The exclusion is to focus on fully battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) which have zero tailpipe emissions and are cleaner than PHEVs.

What also counts now is vehicles procured (“flow”), not vehicles operated (“stock”). The previous EV100 stock commitment considered the vehicles a business had in operation. With the EV100 flow commitment now in place, members must ensure that all vehicles added to their fleets after their specified deadline are zero-emission. This will help:

  • Focus on what members control (new purchases).
  • Reward year-over-year progress.
  • Match how most fleets actually budget and renew vehicles.

What’s new: EV100 Pledge Network (EVPN)

We’ve introduced the EV100 Pledge Network for businesses who want to explore fleet electrification but are not yet ready to make a full commitment. Businesses that join the Pledge Network will benefit from:

  • Access to a peer learning community.
  • Insights into common challenges and proven solutions.
  • Practical guidance to shape their fleet strategy.

EV100 is a coalition of fleet electrification pioneers. Through the revamp, it is now open to many more businesses across India.

What remains the same?

While the programme has evolved, its core principles remain unchanged. EV100 continues to uphold a high level of rigour and accountability. Each year, member progress is shared publicly in the EV100 Insights and Progress Report, produced in partnership with the Carbon Trust.

India is one of EV100’s most active markets. Existing members can keep their original commitments while also choosing to expand into new vehicle categories or geographies. It is a platform where a range of businesses can learn from each other. They will continue to benefit from:

  • A dynamic and growing global network.
  • Knowledge sharing and peer-to-peer learning.
  • Strategic support through events, insights, and policy engagement.

India’s journey towards clean transport is moving fast, and the updated EV100 programme is built to match its pace.
