As catastrophic wildfires still rage across the Los Angeles area, Climate Group extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to all those impacted by this tragedy.
There is no question that the climate crisis is here now. The effects of these fires will be so broad - impacting public health, the national economy, as well as irreplaceable personal losses of property and lives. Estimated to be the worst wildfire in modern California history, the economic losses are expected to be well over $50 billion.
California is a member of the Under2 Coalition, a network of subnational governments committed to climate leadership and reaching net zero emissions by 2050, but they can’t do it alone. It is critical that we take an all of society approach. The only way to make our cities more resilient is if we all work together – governments, businesses and communities.
Angela Barranco, Executive Director of Climate Group North America, said:
“I’m devastated to see the extent of ongoing wildfires across Los Angeles and Southern California. I’ve driven these roads, my loved ones live here. This is a horrible tragedy and not a time for political posturing. Climate change is here, now, and will continue to worsen.
We work with hundreds of businesses around the world committed to moving the needle on climate action, who understand and acknowledge the dire consequences of inaction. What's good for the environment is good for the economy. If we are going to become resilient we need all of society to work together to tackle the causes and consequences of climate change in the hopes of protecting us all. We need to act now.”
