Climate Group responds to the CCC's report

London, 26 February 2024 - Today, the Climate Change Committee (CCC), the UK's independent adviser on tackling climate change, has presented a new pathway to a decarbonised UK.

The CCC sets out how to achieve this by 2050, and what decisions need to be made in the coming years to ensure success. They model that the UK must reduce emissions by 87% (compared to 1990 levels) by 2040 – and show how this is feasible.

Helen Clarkson, CEO of Climate Group, said:

"Surveys show that people in the UK want bold action on climate change but at the same time, they’re facing some of the highest energy bills in Europe. The CCC report makes it clear that these are deeply entwined issues, and the solutions go hand in hand. By investing in clean energy and electrification, the UK can lower bills, create jobs, and secure energy independence.

Households and businesses are ready to act. Now the government needs to set out the right policies and financial incentives to unlock business investment and empower consumers to switch to EVs or install heat pumps. Without this, the transition and its long term benefits will remain out of reach’’ .
