Responding to the G20 Leaders Declaration, Dr Champa Patel, Executive Director for Governments and Policy, said:
“As COP30 in Belém draws to a close without the clarity the world urgently needs, the G20 Leaders’ Declaration was a crucial moment to signal where global climate ambition must go. There are important signals we cannot ignore.
The renewed commitment to limiting warming to 1.5°C gives essential direction as countries develop their next NDCs. Reaffirming net-zero by mid-century reinforces the real-economy transition already underway — but ambition must now be met with accelerated implementation.
It is encouraging to see a clear focus on just transition and the recognition that whole-of-economy, whole-of-society pathways are vital for opportunity and resilience. Elevated attention on adaptation and resilience is equally critical, especially the role of subnational governments in protecting communities as impacts intensify.
The call to scale finance from billions to trillions reflects what we see every day: transformational investment is needed to unlock clean energy, decarbonisation and resilient growth, particularly in emerging economies.
As COP30 concludes, the world needs confidence that governments will deliver on commitments at the speed required. The G20 has a vital role, but now we need follow-through, not just statements.
At Climate Group and across the Under2 Coalition, we work with businesses, states and regions to turn ambition into delivery at the pace this moment demands.”
