Climate Group responds to India's new electric passenger car manufacturing guidelines

New Delhi, 3 June 2025: The Indian government, this week, announced new guidelines under the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars (SPMEPCI), which was approved last year to increase investments from global EV manufacturers and amplify India as a manufacturing destination for e-vehicles.

Atul Mudaliar, Director of Systems Change, India at Climate Group said on the guidelines: "Electric cars must become the new normal if India is to meet its net-zero ambition. The SPMEPCI guidelines are a welcome move, a pathway to encourage global carmakers through fiscal incentives and localisation targets. As we attract global capital, policy continuity and recognition for domestic manufacturers - those who’ve paved the way for early adoption of EVs in India while also backing higher fuel economy despite cost pressures – is needed for a balanced shift."
