"Fossil fuels are in terminal decline"

Written by Admin | Jan 22, 2026 12:00:00 AM

Wind and solar generated more EU electricity than fossil fuels for the first time last year, today's Ember European Electricity Review 2026 shows.

Sam Kimmins, our Director of Energy, comments:

"Solar and wind generate more electricity than fossil fuels for the first time in the EU, leaving no doubt that the energy transition is alive and kicking. Ember's research suggests fossil fuels are in terminal decline, and it's now time for Europe to accelerate our decoupling from unreliable petrostates. By backing affordable renewables, the EU will reduce electricity price spikes, strengthen energy security, and drive economic growth."
