"Clean energy is becoming a global economic powerhouse"

Ahead of the IEA Ministerial Meeting in Paris (18-19 February 2026), Sam Kimmins, Director of Energy at Climate Group, comments:

“Energy ministers and CEOs in Paris face the triple challenge of strengthening national energy security, upgrading outdated systems, and making energy more affordable. The rapid investment in clean energy and advanced technologies highlighted in the IEA's State of Energy Innovation, is now directly helping meet these priorities.

Clean energy is becoming a global economic powerhouse. With one in ten patents now energy‑related and multi‑trillion‑dollar energy‑tech markets rapidly expanding, countries and companies backing renewables and electrification are improving security, cutting volatility, and modernising their grids.

The dominance of battery innovation shows where the future is headed: flexible, resilient, electrified systems that reduce dependence on volatile fuel imports. Businesses adopting storage are lowering costs, boosting reliability, and unlocking new value in flexibility, EV charging, and decentralised power.”
