Climate Group’s work to empower Latino voices within the climate movement was recognized this week with Angela Barranco, Executive Director of Climate Group North America, named in the Sachamama list of 100 Latinos most committed to climate action in 2024, and separately the People en Español 20 most empowering Latinos fighting climate change.
Climate Group North America has focused on a number of initiatives in the past year to elevate Latino and Spanish speaking voices within the climate movement, including a hosting a briefing at the White House last year as part of the US Climate Action Summit in partnership with Climate Power En Acción, bringing together Spanish speaking journalists from across the United States for the first ever Latino climate media briefing, as well as more recently delivering a number of high profile events as part of the official program for Climate Week NYC.
Angela Barranco commented:
“I’m delighted that the work we have been doing at Climate Group to elevate the platform of Latino voices has been recognized in this way, and it is inspiring to hear the stories and learn from the leadership of so many others who see the importance and value of this work. Latino communities often see the impacts of climate change more intensely than others in the United States, as well as in Latin America, however for too long these leaders do not have a seat at the table. It is exciting to see that the experiences, talents and ambition of Latino communities is being recognized, allowing communities to create the change they want to see for future generations.”
Other names featured across the two announcements include Antonieta Cadiz Vargas from Climate Power En Acción, a partner of climate Group North America, and Thais Lopez Vogel from the VoLo Foundation, who are supporting a program of work with Climate Group this year to support Latino voices in Climate Action. The list also includes a range of prominent climate leaders include Gloria and Emilio Estefan, America Ferrera, Christiana Figueres and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
