RE100 has officially expanded its global reach into Latin America, commencing with a high-profile launch event hosted by the British Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event marked the beginning of our partnership with CADER - Cámara Argentina de Energías Renovables, uniting our global corporate influence with local expertise to drive renewable electricity use by companies in Argentina. CADER is the principal organisation that represents the renewables sector in Argentina, and it will be working closely with our team to drive corporate engagement for businesses transitioning to using 100% renewables, including securing the first Argentinian headquartered company to join RE100, and collaborate on building out our policy work plan in the country.
Like many South American countries, Argentina is graced with huge renewable potential. Corporate engagement and collaboration between the government and the private sectors will be crucial to accelerating the country's energy transition. Argentina, which has not made significant investments in its grid network for a quarter of a century, plans to have 57% of its electricity generation coming from renewable sources by 2030, according to its National Energy Transition Plan. The country signed the COP28 pledge to triple global renewable electricity by 2030, presenting an opportunity to boost its domestic renewables and contribute to the global target
Alongside the launch event, our team met with key stakeholders in Argentina's renewable industry, such as representatives for the member provinces of the Under2 Coalition, Fundación Vida Silvestre (WWF Argentina) and local representatives for existing RE100 members. To align our efforts with existing initiatives and foster future collaborations that support renewable infrastructure development and a favourable policy landscape for renewable electricity procurement.
To begin our policy work in Argentina, it’s vital to secure the participation of locally headquartered companies in RE100. As we continue to establish our presence in the region, we actively call on corporations based in Argentina, and Latin America more widely, to join RE100 and demonstrate their leadership by steering the way towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
For global RE100 members with offices or key suppliers in Argentina, or the broader Latin American region, your support is crucial. Please reach out to kfarmer@climategroup.org for further information.
