Developing RE100’s policy priorities in Indonesia

With over 120 RE100 members operating in Indonesia, the country is a priority market for the RE100 campaign. Our members have an electricity demand of 2.1 TWh in Indonesia, power that is committed to 100% renewable electricity by 2050 at the latest. With this in mind, RE100 returned to Indonesia in August 2024 off the back of a successful project scoping trip in February 2023.

RE100 team members were in Jakarta to develop our approach to policy advocacy in the country. At the end of 2023, we formalised a partnership with the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), making them the RE100 campaign partner for Indonesia. During our visit in August our main goal was to publicly launch RE100 in Indonesia and build awareness of our presence with local businesses and policymakers. We also convened our members operating in the market, to refine our policy focus areas and promote our work with influential corporate decision-makers.

RE100 has officially expanded its global reach into Latin America, commencing with a high-profile launch event hosted by the British Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event marked the beginning of our partnership with CADER - Cámara Argentina de Energías Renovables, uniting our global corporate influence with local expertise to drive renewable electricity use by companies in Argentina. CADER is the principal organisation that represents the renewables sector in Argentina, and it will be working closely with our team to drive corporate engagement for businesses transitioning to using 100% renewables, including securing the first Argentinian headquartered company to join RE100, and collaborate on building out our policy work plan in the country.

RE100 calls on Indonesia’s government to unlock the country’s renewables investment potential

Some 430 large global businesses have strongly encouraged Indonesia to increase its ambition on renewable electricity and unlock greater investment in the country’s energy transition. In a letter to President Joko Widodo of Indonesia, penned by CEO Helen Clarkson of Climate Group on behalf of RE100’s 430+ member companies, the letter warns that failing to do so will influence corporate investment in Indonesia. The letter urges Indonesia to get ready for upcoming carbon tariff regulations, such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and Australia’s Carbon Tariff, that are pushing for greener supply chains from large corporates.
