In response to the IEA's Renewables 2024 report Climate Group’s CEO, Helen Clarkson, said:
“This IEA Renewables 2024 report makes it clear a renewable energy revolution is underway, as the cheapest option to add power plants in almost all countries around the world. But it would be a mistake to take this progress for granted. The surge in renewable capacity is positive, but it falls far short of the ambition set at COP28 to triple global renewables capacity by 2030. It's time for governments to make good on that pledge by breaking down the barriers standing in the way of the renewables roll out, particularly renewables permitting and siting issues, lacklustre investment plans, and grid capacity constraints.
Governments must take this moment to act decisively by putting renewables at the heart of their Nationally Determined Contributions due next year. Clinging to the outdated fossil fuel system comes at great cost—to our health, our energy security, our businesses and our communities. Now is the time to accelerate the transition to a 100% renewable energy future for the sake of the planet and future generations.”
