Nike Japan will offtake from sixteen solar power plants located in the Tokyo Electric Power service area. The 18 MW agreement results in 3 MW of new solar projects constructed and supports 15 MW of recently established projects.
Tetsuji Kobayashi, Vice President and General Manager, Nike Japan said, “partnering with Mitsui to cover our facilities with 100% renewable electricity reflects NIKE’s commitment to advancing responsive, resilient, responsible, and efficient operations. We’re proud to help build a better future for sport and our planet.”
Daiki Sato, General Manager of Carbon Solution Business Division at Mitsui said, “we are honored to support Nike in its full transition to renewable energy for its operations in Japan. We will continue to provide comprehensive solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future for industry, society, and the broader environment.”
Access this release in Japanese ,Nike has been a member of RE100, a global corporate renewables initiative, since 2015 and is pending verification against its RE100 target of 100% market-matched renewable electricity in owned and operated spaces by 2025. Led by the international non-profit Climate Group, RE100 brings together over 400 of the world’s biggest and most influential businesses, all committed to using 100% renewable electricity by 2050 at the very latest.
Ollie Wilson, Head of RE100 at Climate Group said, “Japan is a very challenging market for companies that want to buy renewable power. This makes Nike’s new solar power deal particularly impressive; it shows what’s possible to the hundreds of other companies in Japan that are committed to buying renewable electricity. It sends a clear signal to Japanese policymakers that business is serious about investing in renewables and wants to work with them to unlock the Japanese energy transition.”
RE100’s mission is to accelerate change towards 100% renewable grids globally, and in support of its members, it advocates for policy change in markets where members face significant barriers to renewables use. According to the most recent RE100 annual report, RE100 members source only 36% of their electricity from renewables in Japan, compared to 53% for RE100 member electricity use globally.
Over 90 Japanese headquartered companies are members of RE100, and more than 220 international members report operations in the country, including Nike. These members use 44 TWh of electricity in Japan each year.
Nike is accelerating renewable energy adoption across its extended supply chain through partnerships with the Asia Clean Energy Coalition (ACEC), Clean Energy Procurement Academy (CEPA), and the Manufacturing Climate Action Program (MCAP).
